Software Engineering at Google Chapter #17 - Code Search (2 of 3)

  • IDEs are for writing code while code search is for reading, understanding, and searching
  • Google’s code search UI allows u do to things like bring up a file, see a symbol, click on the symbol, then see all other uses of the symbol
  • While Google does use a custom code search tool these links are created with compiler-based indexing tools such as Kythe
  • Code search is scalable. When searching in an IDE it’s a slow line by line search vs an index (similar to a database index)
